Favourites Come Through In FIFA World Cup

It is the quarter-final stage now at the FIFA World Cup being held in Germany.

Hosts Germany will meet in-form Argentina in a repeat of the 1990 World Cup final, while fancied Brazil lock horns with rejuvenated France, repeating the 1998 World Cup final. Seasoned Italy will start as favourites against Ukraine who scraped through their second round match. In the England vs Portugal quarter-final, the English will seek revenge for their loss against the Portuguese in the last Euro championships.

Here are my predictions for the semi-final line-up...

Me, My Birthday & The World Cup Fever

Well, I celebrated my 41st birthday yesterday without much fanfare. It was quite uneventful. Anyway, I did start the day by watching the FIFA World Cup match between Holland and Argentina. It was quite a bore as both teams rested many first-choice players and the match duly ended 0-0, paving the way for both teams to qualify for the next round.

On a personal front, after much thought, I have decided to sign up as a unit trust consultant with Public Mutual, Malaysia's No.1 unit trust company. I need to sit for a test first to qualify me for the license to sell. Although I do not foresee myself selling unit trusts until I die, it will keep me occupied until I get an offer of full-time employment. Selling unit trusts is not as easy as it seems as there are not many people with cash to invest. And if there are, not many are willing to take risks usually associated with investing in this kind of instrument. Anyway, I will be giving my best shot. Every sale that I make will go a long way in making ends meet.

Yes, I have been hit by the FIFA World Cup fever. I have been staying awake after midnight almost everyday to catch matches that start at 3.00 a.m. local time. So much so, I only sleep at around 7.00 a.m. and get up much, much later. Just now, I saw the match in which the Socceroos made history by qualifying for the next stage. A 2-2 draw with Croatia was sufficient to see the team from down under go through for an appetizing fixture with the Italians. Meanwhile, the Brazilian samba proved too much for the Japanese. Two goals from Ronaldo and another two others saw Brazil thump Japan 4-1 to set up a meeting with the surprise package of the World Cup, the Ghanaian Black Stars. An upset is in the cards.
